Cinima5D: Sigma Interview About Full Commitment to L-Mount

Cinima5D interviewed Mr. Kazuto Yamaki from SIGMA corporation about their L-mount alliance announcements at CP+ this year. Below are some key points:

  • Sigma has new 11 lenses coming by the end of the year and an adapter
  • 14mm f/1.8, 20mm f/1.4, 24mm f/1.4, 28mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4, 40mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.4, 70mm f/2.8 macro, 85mm f/1.4, 105mm f/1.4,  135mm f/1.8
  • Totally committed to L-Mount
  • They developed their mount converter so that their lenses could be used on any system
  • L-mount Foveon Body was delayed till 2020 instead of 2019
  • L-mount camera users can use Canon and Sigma lenses without compromise

Sigma and Panasonic seem to be pushing L-Mount hard at CP+2019. Let us hope that Sigma can get Foveon support in Lightroom so that their camera takes off. I think most are fine with the lack of great high ISO out of Foveon cameras due to their amazing color and detail, but Sigma needs a good editor.

Sigma L-Mount Body and Lens Roadmap

It’s going to take Sigma until 2019 to release their Foveon L-mount Full Frame sensor due to research delays, but the sensor is just about finished today. Sigma plans for the sensor to have three 20MP layers which will give 60.9MP. Sigma will also go back to their 1:1:1 design instead of the newer 1:1:4 which reduced one of the RGB layers size to increase light gathering.

TSI Semiconductors of the United States is producing Sigma’s new Foveon sensor. The company is 30 years old and came from NEC. They will produce 250,000 wafers per month, which will be enough to satisfy global demand. The plant uses the Japanese methods 5S, Kaizen, Kanban method, etc…

We will see the first L-Mount lenses from Sigma in August 2019 along with the MC-21 adapter. Sigma will also support mount conversion too and from, SA, EF, F, K, A, E, and L-mount
