Panasonic GH5S Selected as Best Camera For Video by DPReview

The Panasonic GH5S received a lot of attention when it was launched as a specialty camera and it’s kind of surprising that DPReview selected it as their top camera over the Panasonic GH5 since it lacks IBIS and can be more difficult to use, but this is their reasoning.

The GH5S’s sensor allows it to continue shooting excellent quality footage in a wider range of lighting conditions than the regular GH5, and the provision of 10-bit capture ensures its footage is tremendously gradable, even in high dynamic range conditions. –DPReview

The Panasonic GH5S is undoubtedly an excellent camera, but DPReview hasn’t finished their Fujifilm X-H1 testing, so maybe they will change their mind going forward if the ability to shoot under difficult lighting conditions is a serious consideration of theirs. In camera, 10-bit is a unique feature, but most videographers do not need it even if they want to have access to the technology.

Panasonic GH5 AF Improvement/Fix

YodaYeo‘s 120p/150 degree AF Improvement shutter hack for 4k 25p/30p footage seems to work quite well from what I have seen online and some people are addicted to testing the solution.  Max Yuryev did a very thorough test of the hack and it doesn’t work all of the time, but at least it offers an improvement sometimes, which is something cinematographers/videographers can work with.

Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 50-200mm: Mirrorless is Still Smaller and Lighter

If you were into mirrorless cameras from the start then you recall that 43 was the only system designed to be digital from the ground up. When cameras first started going digital sensor size was largely the product of manufacturing constraints and DSLR technology. 43 was designed to get away from that and relatively quickly turned into m43 then the mirrorless revolution exploded. Today m43 still holds a huge advantage over APS-C and Full Frame cameras when it comes to size and weight. The 43 sensor was determined to be the ideal compromise between image quality and the benefit of a smaller sensor with a quicker readout, with the extra benefit of being able to build smaller/lighter camera bodies and lenses.

Today they are building the bodies bigger because photographers want bigger bodies, but they are still much lighter and the lenses are much smaller and lighter. The new Panasonic 50-200mm is a perfect example of the size advantage because it delivers 100-400mm performance in a very small package at f/2.8-4, which is impressive. When I shot Falcon Heavy recently I wished one of my cameras was an m43 one, because it would have saved me some back pain at the end of the day.
