DPReview CP+ 2018 Panasonic Interview

DPReview interviewed Panasonic at CP+ and below are some excerpts worth mentioning

  • GH5 was designed for photos/video, GH5S for video, and G9 for photos
  • Panasonic decided on contrast AF with DFD when they made the GH4 because PDAF pixels can damage image quality.
  • There are no plans to go PDAF
  • Panasonic can improve their contrast AF with DFD
  • Panasonic might make more fixed lens large sensor cameras in the future.
  • They spent the last 3 years building up their video capabilities and now with the G9 they are starting to build up their stills.
  • Panasonic wants respect for video and stills capabilities.

DPReview CP+ 2018 Olympus Interview

DPReview interviewed Olympus at CP+ and below are some excerpts worth mentioning

  • System mobility is their top priority, which is helped by the 2x crop.
  • Olympus primarily markets their cameras for photographers, but they have good video.
  • They don’t have a “strong line of communication with the video audience” but they are still interested in growing it.
  • Olympus has found ways to make their IBIS better since the OM-D EM1 Mark II
  • The TG range is very profitable.

TCSTV: Panasonic ZS200/TZ200

The Panasonic ZS200/TZ200 is still the only 1″ pocket camera with a 15x zoom on the market still even after the success of its predecessor. TCSTV wishes the camera had a built-in ND filter because it has great video quality and a tilty flippy screen for vlogging, but beyond that, it is a good camera for video even with the limited aperture choices along the zoom range. The Panasonic ZS200/TZ200 is a very useful camera but you won’t get a lot of isolation or lowlight, but the 1″ sensor does give you a step up in dynamic range and the camera is fast enough for kid sports.

FastrawViewer Monochrome2DNG 0.8 Released For Monochrome Converted Cameras

FastrawViewer released Monochrome2DNG 0.8 for processing RAW files from monochrome converted cameras like the ones made by maxmax that offers conversion services. This software creates a true monochrome RAW file from the color raw file.

  • It takes input files from cameras that have been converted to monochrome.
  • It then saves it as “truly” monochrome DNG files, suitable for using with popular converters that support the DNG format (that is to say, almost all of them).
  • With this:
  • One can turn on automatic “monochrome” recognition and convert only the files from converted cameras (so one can process a large archive that has both color and monochrome files in it quickly, in one pass).
  • Automatic mosaic pattern suppression is supported (output files will not have 1-pixel grid patterns)
  • Several formats for output DNG are supported, which allows one to use their RAW converter optimally.
  • Filter input files by Vendor/Model/Camera serial to process large archives faster.

The software isn’t targeted at a specific camera type and so any camera supported by libraw should work fine.

You can download Monochrome2DNG 0.8 here.
