CameraJabber: Interview With Shigemi Sugimoto of Olympus

Camera Jabber interviewed Shigemi from Olympus and he elaborated a little on their sad press conference. Below are some key points:

  • Still 100% behind m43
  • The size and weight of m43 is easily distinguishable for Full Frame
  • Full frame vs m43 makes the whole size advantage an easier sell
  • Everyone is making a big deal about mount size, well m43’s mount is twice the size needed for the sensor
  • Olympus is working on longer telephoto lenses
  • Olympus want’s to further reduce the need for tripods
  • Using current technology the cameras and lenses would have to get bigger for better IS, but Olympus believes they will surpass the limitations
  • They will have a major announcement for Photokina 2019 in May next year.

L-Mount Alliance Opinions

Panasonic’s announcement of going full frame via the L-mount alliance was a shocking one and everyone has an opinion, but if you watched Olympus’ conference it certainly feels like m43 as we know it is dying. I’m still trying to digest all the news myself to better cover things going forward, but a few prominent YouTubers have already made videos of their own about the announcement.

Z-Cam 2 Now Shipping

Z Cam shipped their Z Cam 2. You can read their announcement from Facebook below:

Now then we have shipped Z CAM E2.

For those who have pre-ordered, we truly appreciate your support and thank you for your trust. Rest assured we will continue to fulfil the order backlog as soon as we can.

There have been some doubts and criticisms on Z CAM E2: When will we ship? 4K 120fps 10 bit? Dynamic range? Color science…etc etc. Now then we have shipped. Now then it is in your hands. The verdict is yours.

We believe Z CAM E2 is a very powerful device and unmatched by the competition:
– 4K @120fps, 10 bit color.
– 13 stops dynamic range (16 stops with WDR enabled).
– Triple native ISO80/160/800.
– Ethernet connectivity (control/live view/streaming).
– iOS device connectivity (control/live view/streaming). iOS app even supports focus peaking and false color.
– Small form factor. For sure the smallest 4K 120fps 10 bit MFT camera.
– Multi-camera pixel level sync (with external Z CAM Sync cable).

This is just the beginning. More to come.

We continue to listen to our customers and improve whenever wherever we can, with only one objective in mind, to be the best!

Panasonic Interview with Yosuke Yamade, Photo Manager About L-Mount

lesnumeriques interviewed Panasonic’s Yosuke Yamade, Photo Manager about their partnership with Leica and the L-Mount system. Below are some translated and condensed excerpts from the interview:

  • Considered Full Frame 24×36 8 years ago, but at the time there were technical and logistical problems
  • Sony launched their full frame 24×36 cameras five years ago
  • Panasonic felt ready to take on 24×36 full frame two years ago but was worried their 17 years of Lumix wouldn’t be enough to support the system.
  • They looked for partners to help them respect their customers and make their digital full frame more attractive
  • Leica was obvious since they were involved in Lumix since 2001, but they have also had a technological partnership for the past 4 years now.
  • Panasonic was very involved in the design of L-Mount.
  • Sigma was taped for their reputation for high-end products and the things Kazuto Yamaki, CEO of Sigma was passionate about
  • Sigma and Panasonic have a similar philosophy
  • Panasonic brought Sigma and Leica to the table to form the alliance
  • Olympus wasn’t included because their visions are diverging from where they were ten years ago
  • The S1R is big because it provides a good balance between grip, resistance and size
  •  The alliance only concerns the L-mount and its communication system so Sigma can do Foveon without issue
  • Panasonic is working on artificial intelligence for photography and video
  • For AF you have to consider where to focus, how far the subject is from the camera, and the accuracy of the focus
  • DFD technology considers how far the subject is from the camera, and the accuracy of the focus
  • Where to focus is the area that AI can improve
  • AI improves AFing eyes on a face and animals in motion
  • Still working on figuring out 8k for 2020
  • The Panasonic CM1 is dead
  • Panasonic will try to protect the m43 market
