Weather Sealing Test: Olympus OM-D II, Sony a7RIII, Nikon D850, and Canon 5D Mark IV

Image Resource released their water testing for the Olympus OM-D II, Sony a7RIII, Nikon D850, and Canon 5D Mark IV. Of course, the Olympus OM-D II passed without a problem, which isn’t surprising because Olympus has been passing durability tests for years now. Olympus builds notoriously well-sealed cameras for these kinds of tests and no one should hesitate shooting a weather sealed Olympus in the rain or cold.

Cinema 5D: Yosuke Yamane-san Panasonic GH5/GH5S/EV1/G9 Interview

Cinema 5D posted a very interesting interview with Yosuke Yamane-san about the Panasonic GH5/GH5S/EV1/G9 and it clarifies some of their decisions. The interview is in Japanese so if you don’t like subtitles here are some of the highlights:

  • The GH5 is for video and photos so it’s a hybrid camera.
  • Half use it for photos and the other half for video.
  • They almost doubled their initial estimated sales.
  • The GH5S and G9 were designed for those that needed more Photo or Video performance.
  • The video performance is clearly different between the GH5 and GH5S.
  • Panasonic listened to GH5 videographers creating the GH5S and could update the GH5 with some of the features later.
  • The EVA1, GH5 and GH5S were developed by Yosuke Yamane-san’s division at the same time.
  • EVA1 is for broadcast use.
  • Yosuke Yamane-san wanted to release the GH5S before the GH5.
  • Panasonic thinks stabilized lenses are enough when used handheld and those that need more will use a gimbal.
  • Video autofocus was improved
  • Panasonic is on track to do 8k for the Olympics.

DPReview: Panasonic GH5S Added To Studio Scene

The Panasonic GH5S was added to the DPReview Studio scene and the results are less than impressive. In RAW I would say the GH5S holds its own until 6400ISO and in JPEG 12,800ISO, but past that I wouldn’t find the images useful. The performance in video should be slightly different, but these results make me highly doubt any claims that the Panasonic GH5S can beat the Sony a7SII at any task beyond size and price. You can view the DPReview studio comparison scene here.

DPReview: Panasonic G9 Review Silver Award

DPReview published their Panasonic G9 review today and it received an overall Silver Award. The camera is very well rounded for a m43 camera and DPReview seems fairly impressed with the camera.

ProsCons
  • 20MP sensor increases resolution with no increase in pixel-level noise
  • JPEG noise reduction/sharpening is improved
  • Improved JPEG color, especially in challenging light
  • High quality UHD 4K/60p video capture
  • Best in class image stabilization for still shooters
  • Best continuous AF performance we’ve seen from a contrast detect system
  • Improved subject recognition
  • Continuous shooting at 20 fps with continuous AF
  • Buffer at 9 fps is virtually endless
  • High Resolution mode offers extra detail, useful for static subjects
  • Large electronic viewfinder
  • Rugged, weather-sealed body with easy-to-access controls
  • Top plate LCD
  • AF joystick
  • Highly-customizable
  • Face Detect AF can finally be turned on without a trip to menus
  • Dual UHS-II high speed card slots, with support for V-class
  • USB 3 (Type C) jack can power and charge camera
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • Depth from Defocus flutter is distracting when shooting action
  • EVF resolution drops when shutter is pressed
  • AF joystick can not move points diagonally and is not responsive enough
  • Nose activates touchpad AF, no option to limit activation area
  • Screen can not be flipped out when ports are in use
  • 20 fps mode using electronic shutter can result in rolling shutter effect
