BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera: Reviews, Comparisons and More

The Blackmagic Design Pocket Camera 4k will start shipping soon, so there are a lot of reviews coming out. Cameras like the Blackmagic Design Pocket Camera are a perfect example of the advantages of m43 and will likely be the direction that future m43 cameras go in if the format starts to become less popular with photographers. It offers incredible value and performance for someone interested in getting into filmmaking that larger sensor cameras just can’t compete with.

DPReview TV: Panasonic LX100II

DPReviewTV tested the Panasonic LX100II and they kept a lot of the features people loved. The LX100II is still a very tactile camera. Excerpts below:

  • New Grip isn’t as good as the original
  • They wish the EVF was better
  • The back screen has improved and has a touch screen interface
  • Much easier to select the focal point
  • The back dial is still cheap plastic and it should have been improved
  • Still no weather sealing
  • Same lens as the original, which had trouble with sensor/lens dust.
  • Minimal change in resolution as you change the aspect ratio
  • New 20MP sensor gives you about 17MP of useful resolution
  • New venus processing engine
  • New color science, but the original was more realistic
  • New filters
  • The image quality has improved since the original
  • Good Macro capability
  • No flip out screen
  • 4k Photo mode with focus stacking, pre-burst, etc…
  • There is a 1.3x crop
  • Compares very well against Sony/Canon compacts
  • Should get an external charger in the box
  • Bluetooth capable
  • Motorized zoom is very slow just like the original
  • Great battery life
  • Improved buffer for burst shooting
  • Single AF is very fast
  • Continuous AF doesn’t work well
  • IBIS is very good
  • Least video-centric camera in their lineup
  • 4k is soft and oversharpened
  • Doesn’t show crop until you start recording
  • One of the best timelapse cameras on the market
  • They kept all of the good stuff the same but should have fixed more problems since the original is 4 years old
  • Very comparable IQ to 1-inch sensors
  • Very close to APS-C performance too
