Panasonic: World’s First Organic CMOS Image Sensor With Electrically Controllable Near-Infrared Light Sensitivity Announced

World’s first*1 Organic CMOS Image Sensor with Electrically Controllable Near-Infrared Light Sensitivity
The new technology enables frame by frame switching between modes of color imaging and NIR imaging. In addition, fine motion sensing is realized by global shutter operation.

Osaka Japan, – Panasonic Corporation today announced that it has developed a new technology, electrical control of the near infrared (NIR) light sensitivity of the same pixel in an organic CMOS image sensor. The sensitivity of all the pixels in the image sensor, which has directly stacked organic films, is simultaneously controlled by changing the applied voltage to the organic films.

This technology enables to switch between modes of color imaging*2 and NIR imaging frame by frame without a mechanical IR cut filter required for conventional image sensors. This contributes to miniaturizing a camera system and improving the robustness. This technology also enables global shutter operation*3 [1]. Therefore, it can be suitable for applications in various fields of industry such as machine vision or intelligent transportation system, in which fast and accurate inspection or recognition are necessary.

The new technology has the following advantage.
Frame by frame switching between color imaging mode and NIR imaging mode without the loss of resolution. Read More »

Panasonic GH5 Autofocus Test

Kai tests the Panasonic GH5 with Photogearnews.

“We got hold of a Panasonic GH5 pre-production sample from CVP this week. To test it out the autofocus and image stabilisation in video mode we sent Dan Chung to follow Kaiman Wong around while he films the latest review for his own channel. Please remember this is a pre-production camera and the autofocus, IS and image quality may all change by the time the camera comes out. This video is just to give you an idea of what the camera is currently capable of.

The lens was the Leica DG 12-60mm f2.8 kit lens that is Dual-IS compatible.

The technical stuff: Camera was set in Cinelike V gamma (the test camera did not have V-Log enabled sadly)

Autofocus was set to touch with a medium sized focus area most of the time. We tried to keep the AF area over the subject as much as possible.

ISO was set at 200 most of the time apart from the indoor shots which were 1600 (and lit by red lanterns so the colours were off) All the images are roughly graded using Filmconvert’s GH4 Cinelike V profile with FJ8533 ET film emulation.

Both in-body and lens Image stabilisation was turned on. No rig was used and the camera is completely handheld at all times.”
