Unlock CineLikeD and V for GX80/GX85

The Panasonic GX80/GX85 are great cameras for photographers, but now they might find some usefulness for cinematographers willing to go through the trouble to perform this hack. The reader that sent this in warned that this is less than ideal and obviously it can be risky.

First you’ll need this file in order to connect to the camera:

You can also follow this link in order to learn more about how this works and to thank the people that came up with it:

DISCLAIMER: As with the Sony Unlock video I claim NO RESPONSIBILITY or LIABILITY at ALL… in any way. I didn’t come up with it… I’m just explaining it. Use at your own risk.

Hopefully, Panasonic will implement these features in a future firmware update now that they have been fully exposed, but if not maybe we can hope for a hacked firmware to emerge. Either way, chances are good that this process will be made easier in the future.

Laowa 7.5mm f/2 Reviews

The Laowa 7.5mm f/2 is an exciting lens for m43 users offering an extra stop or more of performance at the ultrawide end. It’s not a perfect lens, but not many ultra-wide lenses are. This is an extremely wide lens and it has some flaws, but nothing that can’t be overlooked if you need to shoot this wide.

Apertus AXIOM Beta Interview by Cinema5D

Cinima5D recorded a lengthy interview with AXIOM project leader Sebastian Pichelhofer. AXIOM is an open source camera project that lets you assemble your own camera. You can build an APS-C, 2/3, and 4/3 camera from their kit, but they are only beginning to deliver some of the promised stuff from their crowdfunding now, so it might take a while for them to deliver a complete package.

Keypoints by Cinima5D

  • Over 500 people backed their successful Indiegogo campaign
  • Magic Lantern was assigned to develop the “color science” behind the camera
  • The camera will actually have a few “color science options” to choose from, making it possible to change “film stock” at the click of a button
  • The philosophy of building a “Lego-type camera” hasn’t changed. One will be able to mix and match between different components like lens bayonets, sensor types and such
  • Two kinds of camera enclosures are in the making: a “Lite” 3D-printed version for users who need it now, and a robust version made of aluminium that will serve the majority of future users
  • The guys at Apertus are looking at an SD RAID recording solution for their camera, where users can swap the cards according to their needs themselves
  • EVERYTHING is open to the community to inspect and check, from cost of materials to the actual development status. See full details at the Apertus site here

If you’re interested in the project you can read more here. There is also sample footage from t camera available the here.

Panasonic GH5 Reviews and Tips

The Panasonic GH5 is second to none at its price point for videographers and cinematographers, but it benefits quite a bit from an Atomos Ninja Inferno. While the Panasonic GH5 won’t replace a Sony FS7 the quality is really good.

Of course, shooting log comes with its own problems and some might have difficulty exposing properly HDR properly. Below you can get some hints on how to use an Atomos Ninja Inferno to properly expose  scene.

Unfortunately, the Pansonic GH5 does not come without issues. What some call a jitter or artifact I would describe as a chugging effect. If your video looks weird while panning watch the video below for some possible solutions to the problem.

Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II Reviews

Maarten Heilbron released his lengthy Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II review and it is very positive but exposes a few flaws that might matter to people interested in purchasing one. Below camerahorder compares the OM-D to the Panasonic GH5, Fujifilm X-T2 and Sony a6500/6300. The only real complaint from both reviews seems to be the menu system that Olympus has devised, which is even confusing for Olympus shooters.
