Panasonic GH5s Might Sell For As Much As $2,500

Photorumors received more information today that the Panasonic GH5s could go for $2,500 at launch. The GH5s better offer some unique features at that price point beyond low light performance or risks being criticized like the OM-D EM-1 for having an unrealistically high price point. The Panasonic GH5 escaped ridicule on par with the OM-D was because it offered so many unique features for video professions when it was released.

The Panasonic GH5S Might Have a IMX294 STARVIS Chip Inside

Sony STARVIS technology was developed for security camera application and could be very interesting if applied to a camera, but I find one issue with this rumor. The Panasonic GH5s should cost less than the GH5 because security camera sensors are designed to be mass produced and inexpensive. Maybe Panasonic reworked the IMX294 chip with Sony to suit their needs, but the chip should still cost less than the current chip inside the GH5.

The sensor has the ability to perform much of what the Panasonic GH5 does and more but will lack 6k photo or really any abilities beyond 4k. It would be far more interesting to take STARVIS technology and put it in a 12MP or 16MP sensor origionally designed for photography for the Panasonic GH5s, but we will see.

Panasonic GH5s Rumored To Be Coming Soon (1-2 Months)

Photorumors received an interesting tip today about a low light high-performance Panasonic GH5 in the works that could be called the Panasonic GH5s to be released in the next 1-2 months. The release of a Panasonic GH5s to compete with the Sony a7S would certainly be a compelling purchase for GH5 fans, but it could trigger the early release of the Sony a7SIII similar to Nikon’s launch of the D850, which is widely believed to have pushed the a7RIII launch ahead of the a7MIII launch. Competition is always good for consumers and Panasonic venturing into low light high-end video cameras is a welcome addition and hopefully speaks to the health of their cameras division. I wonder if the GH5s will have a tweaked 12MP or 16MP sensor for video and how good m43 low light performance can possibly get.

Update – Adorama listed a Panasonic Lumix DC-GH29 with GH5 specs today
