New Compact & Lightweight Super-Telephoto Lens with POWER O.I.S. – For Handheld 400mm Equivalent Telephoto Shooting

  • Sharpest-ever corner to corner image quality in LUMIX history
  • Highly versatile lens – Perfect for wildlife and sports photography
  • High-speed, high-precision lens perfect for the contrast AF system for both photo and video recording

Panasonic introduces a new 200mm f/2.8 super-telephoto lens, the LEICA DG ELMARIT 200mm / F2.8 / POWER O.I.S. (35 mm camera equivalent: 400 mm). The LEICA DG ELMARIT 200mm / F2.8 / POWER O.I.S. is the first large aperture, super-telephoto fixed focal length lens named LEICA DG. It boasts the sharpest-ever corner to corner image quality in LUMIX G CSC (Compact System) camera history. Featuring a fast constant aperture lens in a compact, lightweight design, and thanks to the O.I.S (Optical Image Stabilizer) enables handheld super-telephoto shooting.

With its 400mm super-telephoto focal length equivalent and stunning performance, the LEICA DG ELMARIT 200mm / F2.8 / POWER O.I.S. is suitable for wildlife and sports photographers. The bundled 1.4x Teleconverter (DMW-TC14) increases the focal length to 560mm (35mm camera equivalent) for getting closer to the action[1].

The fast F2.8 aperture lets you capture fast-moving subjects while the POWER O.I.S. effectively compensates for the hand-shake movement, making it easier to shoot even without a tripod or in low-light situations. The lens is compatible with Dual I.S.[2] (Image Stabilizer) and Dual I.S. 2[3] systems when mounted on the Panasonic LUMIX G CSC cameras for the most effective image stabilisation.

Complying to LEICA’s stringent quality standard, the lens is comprised of 15 elements in 13 groups, featuring two UED (Ultra Extra-low Dispersion) lenses. The use of UED lenses and the crystallization of Panasonic cutting-edge optical technology helps achieve high resolution, high contrast corner to corner images while suppressing distortion and chromatic aberration.

Incorporating a triple linear motor system and max.240 fps sensor drive, the new LEICA DG ELMARIT 200mm / F2.8 / POWER O.I.S. achieves high-speed, high-precision AF system in both photo and video recording. This stunning AF performance is excellent for recording 4K video, where precise focusing is especially required. In addition, the micro-step drive system as part of the aperture control helps the camera to smoothly manages brightness changes while panning.

It boasts a rugged, dust/splash-proof design and are even freeze-proof up to -10℃ to withstand professional use under harsh conditions.

Offered in beautiful, metallic black colour, it perfectly matches LUMIX G CSC cameras.

The LEICA DG ELMARIT 200mm / F2.8 / POWER O.I.S. can also be used with the 2.0x Teleconverter DMW-TC20 (optional accessory), which extends the focal length to 800mm (35mm camera equivalent) for capturing distant objects.

Panasonic GH5 vs iPhone X vs iPhone 8

The Panasonic GH5 was one of the first affordable cameras to bring 4k 60p to the masses, but the iPhone X/iPhone 8 cuts the price point almost in half. So, of course, someone was going to compare these two devices to see if the iPhone X/iPhone 8 could replace the more expensive GH5 for most tasks.

Shockingly the iPhone X does outperform the GH5 in some tasks. Delivering some very pleasing and saturated video that simply can’t be reproduced on the GH5 by the guy at FStoppers. Of course, Apple does a lot of smart image manipulation in software that the GH5 does not, but if you are not an expert at color grading, shooting in low light, or are posting online the iPhone X isn’t a bad option.

While the iPhone has good optical image stabilization it can’t match the Panasonic GH5’s IBIS + Lens stabilization. Further, the iPhone X has optical stabilization on the zoom and wide angle lens, while the iPhone 8 only has optical stabilization on its wide camera. Another issue to keep in mind is that while shooting 4k 60p the ISO will have to rise for the increased shutter speed, which will disadvantage the smaller iPhone sensor.
