DPReview: Panasonic GH5S Added To Studio Scene

The Panasonic GH5S was added to the DPReview Studio scene and the results are less than impressive. In RAW I would say the GH5S holds its own until 6400ISO and in JPEG 12,800ISO, but past that I wouldn’t find the images useful. The performance in video should be slightly different, but these results make me highly doubt any claims that the Panasonic GH5S can beat the Sony a7SII at any task beyond size and price. You can view the DPReview studio comparison scene here.

DPReview: Panasonic G9 Review Silver Award

DPReview published their Panasonic G9 review today and it received an overall Silver Award. The camera is very well rounded for a m43 camera and DPReview seems fairly impressed with the camera.

ProsCons
  • 20MP sensor increases resolution with no increase in pixel-level noise
  • JPEG noise reduction/sharpening is improved
  • Improved JPEG color, especially in challenging light
  • High quality UHD 4K/60p video capture
  • Best in class image stabilization for still shooters
  • Best continuous AF performance we’ve seen from a contrast detect system
  • Improved subject recognition
  • Continuous shooting at 20 fps with continuous AF
  • Buffer at 9 fps is virtually endless
  • High Resolution mode offers extra detail, useful for static subjects
  • Large electronic viewfinder
  • Rugged, weather-sealed body with easy-to-access controls
  • Top plate LCD
  • AF joystick
  • Highly-customizable
  • Face Detect AF can finally be turned on without a trip to menus
  • Dual UHS-II high speed card slots, with support for V-class
  • USB 3 (Type C) jack can power and charge camera
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • Depth from Defocus flutter is distracting when shooting action
  • EVF resolution drops when shutter is pressed
  • AF joystick can not move points diagonally and is not responsive enough
  • Nose activates touchpad AF, no option to limit activation area
  • Screen can not be flipped out when ports are in use
  • 20 fps mode using electronic shutter can result in rolling shutter effect

Panasonic GH5S Coverage Continued, Low-Light Shootout, Kai, CES Interview and More

Cinima5D will likely be the site to really settle the Panasonic GH5S vs Sony a7SII debate once and for all, but will it be before we see a Sony a7SIII? Sony rushed the Sony a7RIII to market after the Nikon D850 was well received, but the Panasonic GH5S is getting a mixed reception thanks to the removal of IBIS. While I respect this decision and have always valued Fujifilm excluding it from their cameras in order to keep the X-mount as small as possible many demand IBIS for adapted glass.

When it comes to native glass Panasonic already has a lot of glass with OIS, which is better for image quality and a feature that many of their competitors hasn’t developed as much. Panasonic has always had great OIS and some of their OIS glass is in its second generation already offering great performance, which will likely get better via firmware updates. For those that need more the Panasonic GH5S balances just fine on relatively affordable gimbals due to its smaller size/weight. If you are a serious videographer/cinematographer than the Panasonic GH5S should be perfectly suited for your needs.

Panasonic GH5S Hands On, GH5S vs GH5 vs EVA1 vs Sony a7SII and More

There are a few reviewers and sites claiming that the Panasonic GH5S beats the Sony a7SII at low light performance and I just don’t see it. Granted under some lighting conditions the Panasonic GH5S looks better sometimes, but most of the time the Sony a7SII looks slightly more detailed. Colorwise preference plays a big part and I generally prefer the more cinematic look of the a7SII footage being presented, but the GH5S can be graded to look like the a7SII, but take a look for yourself. I would generally agree that these cameras are surprisingly close in performance. Panasonic certainly created an amazing professional video camera and I would much rather maneuver the Panasonic GH5S with light glass attached than a fully loaded Sony a7SII.

For right now I am just going to clump all the videos together for you to pick and choose what you want to watch, but maybe at some point in the future, I will do separate posts with some of the best AF tests, ISO tests, reviews and sample footage. There is a ton of video out there since due to the nature of this camera and there will be quite a bit more every day as videographers get their hands on this very interesting camera.
