Olympus Moving Chinese Production to Vietnam

On May 7, Olympus Corporation announced that it would shut down its Chinese production subsidiary of the company’s video business and consolidate the production of digital camera business related products in Vietnam.

To date, its digital camera business related products are produced at Olympus (Shenzhen) Industrial Ltd. (OSZ) in Shenzhen, China and Olympus Vietnam Co., Ltd. (Olympus Vietnam) in Vietnam and Donnan Province However, due to the decline in the operating rate of OSZ due to the shrinking digital camera market and the difficulty in maintaining competitiveness due to aging of facilities, we decided to consolidate in Olympus Vietnam.

Establishment of OSZ was established in 1991, Olympus Vietnam was founded in 2008.

  • Mirrorless is growing because as the market declines mirrorless is remaining the same size.
  • Camera shipments are going up so things might be stabilizing
  • The camera market has become more like the film days when your camera will last you 4-5 years without becoming outdated.
  • Firmware updates have helped to keep cameras useful longer.
  • In Japan, users are switching to the E-M1 Mark2 from other brands now.
  • Mirrorless Full Frame can’t compete with m43 because they require large lenses.
  • Olympus doesn’t make cheap cameras they only make higher value-added cameras.
  • They do not have a price-driven strategy.
  • PEN-F did pretty well and almost met expectations so it will continue on.
  • Olympus sees value in having multiple form factors.
  • Olympus Pro Advantage and Pro Service are meeting expectations.
  • Size is a big selling point because you don’t have to carry 20lbs of gear.
  • Also, the ruggedness is a big selling point.
  • People that value mobility value ruggedness.
  • Investments in imaging help the whole business.
  • The imaging division directly helps the medical, which is Olympus’ main source of revenue.
  • Olympus would rather spend money on R&D than marketing

Richard Wong Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 50-200mm Review

The Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 50-200mm is an impressive value and Richard Wong finds almost nothing to fault with the lens. It even works well with the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters.

TCSTV: Panasonic GX9 Hands-On

The Panasonic GX9 is a great value with a nice small form factor that might be a bit too small for some. It would be great if it had weather sealing and a tilty flippy screen, but those features were held back for the higher end models. It’s not really meant for vlogging, but its a great pick up and go camera for photographers.
