DPReview: Olympus OM-D E-M1X Review

DPReview reviewed the Olympus OM-D E-M1X and gave it a silver award. You can read the full review here or you can read the pro/cons below.

Ultimately, this camera is probably too niche for most customers, aside from those already heavily invested in the Micro Four Thirds system. If you’ve got the glass, the E-M1X is the best body in the system for sports, action and wildlife photography, which is why we’ve given it a silver award. But if you don’t need twin grips, the E-M1 II should serve you just as well. And if you’re starting out fresh and looking for something to shoot fast-moving subjects, larger sensor cameras with more reliable autofocus can be had for less money.

What we likeWhat we don’t
  • 18 fps continuous shooting with AF
  • Good buffer depth
  • Minimal EVF blackout and a fast refresh rate make it easy to follow fast subjects
  • Sticky subject tracking in stills and video
  • Pleasing JPEG color
  • Good resolution and dynamic range for Micro Four Thirds
  • Hand-held high-res mode for added resolution of stationary subjects
  • Good quality Cinema 4K/24p
  • Excellent image stabilization in stills and video
  • Comfortable grip, good ergonomics, handling and customizability
  • Robust build with extensive weather-sealing
  • Minimal rolling shutter when using e-shutter
  • Two batteries provide adequate shooting time
  • Two UHS-II card slots
  • Microphone and headphone ports
  • USB charging
  • AF-C performance a bit behind competition
  • Larger sensor competition offers better dynamic range and noise performance
  • Log video capture includes less dynamic range than most rivals
  • No easy way to check charge of second battery without digging through menus
  • Menus can be overwhelming (and have lost some labels for navigation)
  • Can’t use ‘Live ND’ during interval shooting
  • Headphone/Microphone gets in way of LCD when flipped out

DXO: Panasonic S1R Scores 100

The Panasonic S1R scored well in DXO’s testing. You can check out the full review here or read the conclusion below.

Panasonic has chosen a new high-resolution 47.3MP CMOS sensor for the Lumix DC-S1R—one that challenges the class-leading sensors in the Sony A7R III and the Nikon Z 7. Intriguingly, it combines attributes of both of its rivals (with some nuances) and achieves near-identical performance results overall.

With its combination of high pixel count, low noise, and exceptional color sensitivity, the Lumix DC-S1R is likely to appeal to the most demanding studio photographers. And when conditions require it, its excellent dynamic range means the S1R should be a viable candidate for interior, wedding, and landscape photographers. Finally, its competitive price will also strongly appeal to keen amateurs who are looking for a solid all-rounder.

Matt Granger: Olympus Water Testing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOmN9zKTAbk

Matt Granger took some Fujifilm cameras to India last year and they broke from water intrusion at a local festival so this year he decided to bring the new Olympus OM-D EM1X and OM-D EM1 Mark II. He briefly tests both under the sink in this video and they both survive as they have in previous videos. Hopefully, Matt has good luck during this trip, because Indian festivals tend to coat cameras in a variety of things that are not good for them.

DPRTV: Panasonic S1R vs Sony a7RIII vs Nikon Z7

DPRTV compared the high-resolution Sony a7RIII vs Panasonic S1R vs Nikon Z7. Below are some excerpts from the comparison:

Handling

  1. Nikon Z7
  2. Panasonic S1R
  3. Sony a7RIII

Displays

  1. Panasonic S1R highest resolution EVF
  2. Nikon Z7 great OLED on the back
  3. Sony a7RIII lowest magnification

Batteries and Media

  1. Sony a7RIII great battery but should have two UHS-II slots
  2. Panasonic S1R huge battery but only ok photo performance
  3. Nikon Z7 single card slot and worst battery life of the batch

Lenses

  1. Sony a7RIII G Master line and a lot of selection with great adapters
  2. Nikon Z7 Good adapter and lots of lenses coming but it’s a new mount
  3. Panasonic S1R hasn’t been around long enough and Leica L-Mount lenses are crazy expensive

Autofocus

  1. Sony a7RIII best of the bunch for AF by far
  2. Panasonic S1R slightly better hit rate than the Nikon but CDAF only
  3. Nikon Z7 bad AF implementation

Video

  1. Panasonic S1R best IBIS and a great XLR adapter with 4k 60p
  2. Nikon Z7 best video AF but bad preamp for audio 10-bit external
  3. Sony a7RIII stuck in 8-bit

Image Quality

  1. Sony a7RIII great dynamic range across the ISO range, but the multishot mode isn’t great
  2. Panasonic S1R best high-resolution mode with the lowest dynamic range at base ISO and most noise at high ISO
  3. Nikon Z7 good image quality, but there is banding if you push the shadows

Panasonic S1R doesn’t have great AF, but great IBIS with the nicest body/displays/interface/video but the biggest issue with this camera is the price.

Sony a7RIII good price point with the best image quality, AF, and battery life, but the camera is starting to show its age. This is probably the best all-around performer.

Nikon Z7 hard to recommend coming into the system because it is really meant to attract photographers with lots of F glass.
