Panasonic GH5 vs iPhone X vs iPhone 8

The Panasonic GH5 was one of the first affordable cameras to bring 4k 60p to the masses, but the iPhone X/iPhone 8 cuts the price point almost in half. So, of course, someone was going to compare these two devices to see if the iPhone X/iPhone 8 could replace the more expensive GH5 for most tasks.

Shockingly the iPhone X does outperform the GH5 in some tasks. Delivering some very pleasing and saturated video that simply can’t be reproduced on the GH5 by the guy at FStoppers. Of course, Apple does a lot of smart image manipulation in software that the GH5 does not, but if you are not an expert at color grading, shooting in low light, or are posting online the iPhone X isn’t a bad option.

While the iPhone has good optical image stabilization it can’t match the Panasonic GH5’s IBIS + Lens stabilization. Further, the iPhone X has optical stabilization on the zoom and wide angle lens, while the iPhone 8 only has optical stabilization on its wide camera. Another issue to keep in mind is that while shooting 4k 60p the ISO will have to rise for the increased shutter speed, which will disadvantage the smaller iPhone sensor.
